Poseidon

Son of Cronus and Rhea, and brother of Zeus and Hades, Poseidon is the god of the sea and its depths. According to myth, when the three brothers divided the world, Zeus received the sky, Hades the underworld, and Poseidon dominion over the waters.

Seafarers invoked him for a safe passage, yet feared his anger, which could raise storms and shake the earth. The trident, his most recognisable attribute, expresses this power: a force capable of granting calm or unsettling what once seemed unshakeable.

It is this changing nature that makes him such a compelling figure. Poseidon embodies a sea that offers shelter and opens new routes, while always retaining something unpredictable, beyond human control.

In our ring, the god appears holding his trident, his bearded face turned to one side, with waves gathered around him. The composition takes shape in a cameo carved into grey Tahitian mother of pearl: a material born in the sea carries the image of its ruler. Iridescent reflections travel across the relief and shift with the light, recalling the movement and colours of water.

The Mother of Pearl

The cameo is carved from genuine grey Tahitian mother of pearl, chosen for its natural reflections and the way it responds to light.

Silvery grey can give way to shades of green, rose, blue or violet, revealed as the jewel is viewed from different angles. Each fragment has its own combination of colours: no two cameos are exactly alike.

These variations are inherent to the material and give each ring its individual character.

Cameo dimensions: approximately 19 × 16 mm.

This format allows room for the figure, trident and waves, giving the ring a distinctive presence on the hand and allowing the composition to be appreciated as a whole.

The Cameo

In a cameo, the image rises in relief above the surface of the material. Part of the background is carved away to reveal the forms, creating depth through volume, light and shadow.

Poseidon occupies the centre of the oval. The trident emphasises the figure’s vertical lines, while the drapery and waves follow the curves of the composition. His beard, hair and the folds of fabric introduce a rhythm of carved lines that become more or less visible as the light changes.

Carving and iridescence meet on the same surface: as you move your hand, some details catch the light while others return to shadow.

This technique belongs to glyptic art, the art of carving figures, symbols and portraits into gemstones and precious materials, capturing an image within just a few millimetres.

The Ring

The Poseidon cameo is set in a signet ring made in Italy, available in:

Solid 925 sterling silver
or
Bronze

Silver complements the cooler reflections of the mother of pearl. Bronze provides a warm frame, contrasting with the grey background and its shifting colours.

The open, adjustable band allows the fit to be gently adapted to the finger and makes choosing the ring as a gift easier. If you have any questions about sizing, we will be happy to help.

Each piece is prepared individually after your order is placed.

Production time: approximately 1 week.

An Image to Carry With You

The sea can represent a familiar place, a memory, a longing for freedom or a fascination with the unexplored. The image of Poseidon leaves room for these interpretations, without imposing a single meaning.

For the person who chooses it, the cameo may become a reminder of nature’s strength, determination or a personal connection to the sea. It may also simply be a much-loved image, chosen for its composition and the way it comes to life in mother of pearl.

It is this meeting of material, image and meaning that fascinates us about glyptic art: holding a story within a few millimetres and entrusting it to someone who chooses to carry it with them.

As mother of pearl is a natural material, its colour and iridescence may vary slightly from the photographs.

From the Archive

In mythological imagery, a single attribute can make a figure recognisable. The trident identifies Poseidon; the waves evoke his realm.

Within the small space of a cameo, these elements become essential: they preserve the subject’s identity and allow a story to remain legible in the material.

Our cameo continues this exploration: giving form to an ancient image so that it can become part of the wearer’s personal story.
